Carnival Of Acireale
Explore la bellezza of Italy.
Each winter, the baroque city of Acireale bursts into life with one of Sicily’s most celebrated events: the Carnival of Acireale. Held in the weeks leading up to Lent, this historic festival transforms the elegant streets and piazzas into a vibrant stage of color, music, and creativity. Dating back to the late 16th century, the carnival is deeply rooted in local tradition and civic pride.
What sets Acireale’s carnival apart are its spectacular allegorical floats, towering creations made from papier-mâché and animated with movement, lights, and sharp political satire. Crafted by skilled artisans over many months, these floats parade through the city to the delight of thousands of visitors. Equally enchanting are the floral floats, entirely covered in fresh blossoms arranged into intricate designs that celebrate both nature and artistry.
Throughout the city, masked revelers, marching bands, and street performers create a festive atmosphere, while the scent of traditional sweets—chiacchiere, cassatelle, and citrus treats—fills the air. As night falls, illuminated floats turn Acireale into a glowing open-air theatre.
More than a celebration, the Carnival of Acireale is a joyful expression of Sicilian culture, blending humor, craftsmanship, and centuries-old tradition into an unforgettable winter experience.
