Gelato Museum
Explore la bellezza of Italy.
Nestled in the heart of Bologna, Italy—a region celebrated for its culinary wonders—the Gelato Museum Carpigiani offers a delicious journey through time. More than just a museum, it's a tribute to one of Italy’s most iconic frozen desserts: gelato.
Opened in 2012 by Carpigiani, the world-renowned gelato machine manufacturer, the museum is the first of its kind entirely dedicated to the history, culture, and technology of artisan gelato. It invites visitors behind the scenes to discover how gelato evolved from ancient sorbets enjoyed in the courts of Arabia and Rome to the rich, creamy indulgence we love today.
The museum’s immersive exhibits span centuries, featuring over 20 original machines, historical documents, photographs, and multimedia installations. You'll trace gelato’s transformation—from the Renaissance experimentation of Florentine chefs to the development of modern refrigeration and the global spread of Italian gelato culture.
One of the most engaging aspects is the hands-on experience. Guests can witness live gelato-making demonstrations and even try their hand at crafting their own frozen dessert. Workshops and tastings allow you to explore flavours and techniques guided by expert artisans.
But the Gelato Museum isn’t just about nostalgia. It also highlights contemporary innovation and sustainability in the industry, showcasing how gelato continues to evolve while honouring its artisanal roots. The neighboring Carpigiani Gelato University, founded in 2003, is the world’s premier gelato school, offering courses to aspiring gelatieri from across the globe
Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply have a sweet tooth, the Gelato Museum Carpigiani offers a uniquely flavourful slice of Italian heritage. It’s a charming stop where culture, science, and dessert come together in perfect harmony.
Don’t leave without a scoop (or two) from the on-site Gelateria—you’ll be tasting history in every bite.
