Natale Di Roma

Explore la bellezza of Italy.

Every year on April 21st, the city of Rome celebrates its birthday — Natale di Roma, the "Birth of Rome”. It’s a day filled with pageantry, pride, and a deep sense of timeless history. But what exactly makes April 21 so special?

According to Roman mythology, the city was founded on April 21, 753 BCE by Romulus, the city's first king and namesake. Legend has it that Romulus and his twin brother Remus were the sons of the god Mars and a Vestal Virgin, Rhea Silvia. Abandoned as infants and suckled by a she-wolf in a cave known as the Lupercal, the twins grew up to become bold leaders. Ultimately, Romulus killed Remus in a dispute over the city’s location and became Rome’s first ruler.

Every April 21st, Rome transforms into a living museum. Locals and tourists alike flock to the streets to witness:

  • Historical reenactments at the Circus Maximus — gladiators, centurions, and vestal virgins parade in full costume.
  • Fireworks and light shows illuminating the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
  • Cultural events, concerts, and free museum entry across the city.
  • A reenactment of the foundation ritual, tracing the sacred boundary — pomerium — that Romulus is said to have plowed to mark the city’s beginning.

For Romans, it's more than a holiday — it’s a celebration of identity. After all, few cities can claim to be the birthplace of an empire, the cradle of Western civilization, and still hold their ground as a global cultural beacon nearly 2,800 years later.

So, wherever you are on April 21st, raise a glass of wine and toast to the city that gave us roads, laws, Latin, literature, and a legacy that shaped the world.

Buon Compleanno, Roma! Here's to the next thousand years.
